I’m used to the noises that Lucky chucks out these days.
In days gone by I’d have been thinking “dammit, yet another new noise!” and it’d play on my mind until I went into explorer mode and sniffed it out.
These days, there’s so many sounds, knocks, and bumps emanating from Lucky I tune them out because my hair’s grey enough already, without worrying even more.
Anyway, the sun was out and we’re clinging to the last of the warm weather, so I thought I’d make use of the sunny spell and clear up a couple of tasks on the ol’ boy.
Bonnet was popped, you know… To make it look like I know what I’m doing when fixing cars. The engine was running. And there it was…
…yet another new noise. So I popped the torch out and had a quick glance inside Lucky’s engine bay.
I wasn’t expecting to see anything as it’s pretty tight in there. Unlike the earlier Discoverys, there’s a bucket load of plastic engine covers getting in the way, making it difficult to see anything without stripping stuff out.
Here’s the thing, it became blindingly obvious, pretty quickly, just what was churning out the noise – and it wasn’t what I thought…

Anyway, the photo doesn’t do it justice, there’s more to see. So here’s a brief video of the culprit (only a handful of seconds long).
I’ve seen knackered belts like this before, but not the knock on effect.
To be honest, this is gonna play on my mind until it’s done because it could give up the ghost at any time – and probably when I’m furthest away from OLR HQ.

PS. I’m also wondering if this could be the gremlin that’s causing engine vibration at 2250rpm. Be nice if it was, but I’m not holding my breath. I wouldn’t be that Lucky – pun intended.
